Samuel Autman is an award-winning essayist, journalist and works as an assistant professor of creative writing at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. His essay “A Dash of Pepper in the Snow” was the second place winner for the Tara L. Masih Intercultural Essay Prize, sponsored by the National League of American Pen Women in San Francisco in 2010. A year later two chapters “A Walk Through the Neighborhood” and “Invisible Nails” both from Sanctified: A Memoir have received honorable mention in the Linda Joy Myers Memoir and the Katheryn Krotzer Laborde Literary Nonfiction contests, respectively, through the National League of American Pen Women. Two of Autman’s essays earned honorable mentions in the University of New Orleans Study Abroad nonfiction competition in 2007 and 2010. His writing has appeared in The Q Review, www.postcardmemoirs.com, I’m Black and I Travel, as well as in many reason newspapers and magazines. He finished an MFA in narrative nonfiction at Columbia University.
