About

As a fifth grader in Saint Louis, Samuel Autman went door-to-door on his bicycle, delivering the Post Dispatch. He’s been caught up in newspapers and writing ever since. His work has appeared in the Birmingham Post-Herald, Tulsa World, Salt Lake Tribune, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and finally The San Diego Union-Tribune. In an eerie twist of fate, one of his own stories – about a former prostitute-drug addict member of the Crips who went on to become a hugely successful lawyer and international celebrity – helped him see his way out of daily journalism. His book proposal helped Cupcake Brown find an agent and a Random House deal for her book, “A Piece of Cake.” After leaving newspapers in 2002 he worked for three years teaching journalism at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Currently he is finishing his MFA in creative writing at Columbia University.
